beta5 &firmware

The beta5 ask me to update the firmware of my interface.
My question is, if I update the firmware it will continue to work with the last "official" release (20 OCT 2006)? or is there any way to downgrade the firmware?
When the update firmware window pops up I click in "cancel" the software open and sometimes it recognise my interface some times it says no interface is connected and start in demo mode.
Please guys when you put a new version (beta or official) available for download, please give us some information on what's new, bugs fixed, installation issues, etc.
